Thinning hair is about density — how much hair you have and how substantial each strand feels. Both can be improved cosmetically, within limits worth being honest about.
What thinning hair responds to
Density has two components: the number of hairs and the thickness of each one. Cosmetic care works on the appearance of both — plumping the fibre, cleansing the scalp environment, and reducing the breakage that makes hair look sparser than it is. What it does not do is treat medical hair loss. Pattern loss, sudden shedding and patchy loss are matters for a dermatologist or trichologist. The two work well alongside each other, and our stylists will tell you plainly which one you are dealing with.
Our top picks
- Best shampoo for thinning hair: Kérastase Densifique Bain Densité. Hyaluronic acid and gluco-peptides strengthen the fibre while clearing build-up from the scalp, so hair is left with body and bounce. A Homme version is available.
- Best masque: Kérastase Densifique Masque Densité. Creates thicker-looking hair and detangles easily, without the weight that flattens fine hair at the root.
- Best treatment: Kérastase Densifique Cure Densifique, in single-dose vials with a comb applicator. Available as a 30-vial month or a 10-vial starter pack. Stemoxydine and a glycan complex work at the scalp while a texturising polymer thickens the fibre itself.
- If dandruff is part of the picture: the Kérastase Symbiose range — Bain Crème for dry or sensitised hair, Bain Pureté for oilier scalps.
