Dry & Dull Hair
Dull hair is a light problem. A rough, raised cuticle scatters light instead of reflecting it, which is why dry hair looks flat however healthy it actually is.

Why hair loses its shine
Shine comes from a smooth, closed cuticle — light hits an even surface and bounces back evenly. Dryness, hard water, heat and colouring all roughen that surface. Restoring shine therefore means two things at once: putting moisture back inside the fibre, and smoothing the outside so it reflects again. Products that only coat the hair give you a day of gloss and nothing underneath.
Our top picks
- For genuinely dry hair: the Kérastase Nutritive range, graded by how dry your hair is — Bain Satin Riche and Masquintense for very dry, medium to thick hair.
- For shine specifically: Kérastase Gloss Absolu. Hyaluronic and glycolic acids smooth the cuticle rather than coating it, for up to four days of gloss.
- The one-step answer: Kérastase Elixir Ultime, a blend of marula, camellia and argan oils that smooths on contact.
- If your hair is coloured: Kérastase Chroma Absolu, which reduces fibre porosity so tone stays true and shine lasts.
- If hard water is the culprit: Kérastase Premiere, which lifts the calcium deposits that make hair feel rough and look lifeless.
